From Karma to Compassion

During a recent visit to the United States, my elderly father undertook the long flight from India despite his age and health challenges. The desire to spend meaningful time with my brother, whom he could not meet enough during an earlier visit, became an inspiration for this journey. It was a reminder of how deeply a parent's love, care, and attachment can move the heart.

The wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita helps us reflect on the nature of our desires. Our attachments reveal the relationships and emotions that shape our journey through life and beyond. Karma describes how our choices and desires leave impressions on our consciousness, guiding our experiences.

The bhakti tradition shows how love can gradually become more selfless and compassionate . Prince Prahlada showed compassion even toward those who opposed him, and Prince Dhruva began with a personal desire but discovered a higher purpose through devotion.

During this visit, my father also visited places of worship and witnessed how communities come together through service, prayer, and shared spiritual values. These experiences offered a glimpse into how spirituality can bring people together beyond individual circumstances and identities.

This week, as communities around the world celebrate Janmastami, the sacred festival honoring the appearance of Sri Krsna, we are reminded of a timeless message from the Bhakti tradition. Beyond the joy, music, prayers, and celebrations, Janmastami represents the arrival of divine love, compassion, and the opportunity to reconnect with the deeper purpose of life.

Like a river that begins as a small stream and eventually merges with the ocean, the heart gradually moves from limited attachment toward a deeper connection with the Divine.

The journey from karma to compassion is the journey of transforming love into selfless devotion.
